Spurgeon served as Director of Communication for United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) from 2012-1015. In this role, she was responsible for developing and delivering messaging to and on behalf of the union’s 35,000 members. She raised the union’s media profile and earned the respect of the rank and file, as well as the officer team.
Duties included: writing news releases and internal pieces; staging news conferences, rallies and other public events; vetting media inquiries and facilitating interviews; coaching officers and teachers in preparation of public speaking events and media interviews; producing videos in support of the educators’ messaging; and managing a staff of eight.
Spurgeon worked at CNN from 1986-2004. She began her career at the network in Atlanta as a Newscast Producer. She was quickly promoted to Executive Producer. Later she moved to Los Angeles, where she was promoted to Deputy Bureau Chief. CNN’s CEO recognized Spurgeon for her journalistic and management expertise and promoted her to LA Bureau Chief and Vice President. She managed a staff of 100, overseeing newsgathering for much of the West coast. During her tenure, the Los Angeles Bureau reported on earthquakes, plane and rail disasters, police corruption allegations, high profile trials, the California energy crisis, the gubernatorial recall, 911, and other major breaking news events.
Spurgeon coached on-air talent and mentored women journalists throughout her time at CNN. She also honed her communication skills over the years and was often invited to speak on behalf of the network. Today she speaks before various groups, on her experiences as the network’s first woman Bureau Chief in the U.S., and the lessons she has learned as a woman business owner.
